In Memoriam Qathryn Brehm

Visiting Universal City in Los Angeles with friends Madge and Lisa

She has left us, The captain of our ship. Qathryn Brehm was the north star that led us through community, to unity, into family.

Qathryn took on the presidency of the IAA-USA (International Association of Art – USA) as it was being birthed from infancy. Throughout the growing pains of this awesome endeavor, she pushed us to keep going.  She made us feel vital, imparting in us a sense of shared responsibility – that of being an urgent and integral part of our DTLA art scene, the IAA’s lineage and history.

An icon in our community, Qathryn welcomed everyone. She cheered us on in all of our endeavors - as individuals, artists, galleries, as part of neighborhood assemblies, school districts, and city councils - she fought for us.

A profound, astute, irreverently playful artist and writer herself, so much of her life force was spent lifting up others, mentoring them, recognizing their unique voices, encouraging them in their individuality, giving them both, platform and support.

Qathryn gave us wings – She saw us, she heard us, she championed us. She was the heart that encompassed us all.

Dear Qathryn, we are so indebted to you. We shall miss you every day, and hope to carry on your spirit – your generous, loving way.
